Bunnies...bunnies bunnies bunnies!
So this month we decided we needed more animals (eye roll) and I went on Craigslist and found some cute little miniature mixed breed bunnies! They are Dutch/Mini-Lops and just the cutest tiny little things. So curious, friendly and happy :) We have had rabbits before, but I have to say so far these are the sweetest ones yet.
I've learned a lot about proper animal care in recent years. All the things we did while I was growing up were not necessarily the proper way to do things. I have to say I have Google to thank for this, and the fact that I like to research things. So just throwing the little buns in a cage and giving them pellet food everyday is wrong wrong wrong! They primarily need hay (grass hay not alfalfa). So of course their diet in our home started with lots of grass hay that I had in the garage for the sheep already (sheep are supposed to have primarily graze land or grass hay and not feed as well). For more information on how to feed your bunnies look here. One website said to only start them on one new food at a time and introduce slowly. So far its been hay and pellets for these guys, but tomorrow we start with a new veggie! I wasn't too worried about feeding them pellets even tho they are a bit fattening because they are a bit under weight (or were, they are better now).
The original plan was to put them in a hutch outdoors, but when I got them they were about the size of 3 or 4 week old kittens! Of course that was too tiny to put them outside so currently they are living in a small animal cage indoors. Depending on how big they get will decide if they ever move outside. We do currently put them in a small cage outside when we are working in the yard. They get to play and eat grass because the cage has no bottom (I staked it to the ground to be safe) and we get to enjoy them while gardening.
The bunnies were born Easter of this year (2012). Both are girls. The black one is named Ebony and the blue and white one doesn't have a name yet. Any suggestions? Aren't they just the cutest? You can kind of see how small they are next to the flowers. Ebony is in front of my miniature roses and the other bunny is in a pot of pansies.
And my favorite thing of all about bunnies? They just don't grow out of the baby cute like most animals!
